Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency MEM50006 - Check operational capability of marine craft
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to conduct basic checks on the operational condition of engine and sail powered recreational vessels in or out of the water and relates to workplaces in which vessels are built, repaired, stored, sold and transported. The scope of the unit is limited to identifying and reporting that a vessel is not of its 'normal' appearance at rest on its mooring or berth, or after being brought out of the water and includes basic operational checks similar to those routinely performed by machinery or vehicle operators. This unit does not include an assessment of seaworthiness or durability but it does cover watertight integrity and the information would be reported to a supervisor or manager who would determine any further action. Where operational checking of sails and sails systems is required unit MEM50007 Check operational capability of sails and sail operating equipment should also be selected. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: EUnit Weight: 0
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This field allows for different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Hull and fittings include the following:

surface finish and general condition of the hull inside and out as well as any fittings both above and below the water line where visible

Safety equipment includes one (1) or more of the following:

flotation devices

communication systems including lights

flares

pumps and bailers

anchor

halyards and chains

emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs)

fire extinguishers

torches

lifelines

Operating systems include the following:

mechanical propulsion systems

communication systems

steering systems

pumping systems

winches and cable handling equipment

ultra low voltage electrical systems operating at 12 or 24 volts d.c.

Domestic systems include one (1) or more of the following:

water supply and heating

air conditioning and heating

lighting

cooking

refrigeration

sewage and sullage

entertainment systems

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
